The Pros and Cons of Going With a Keyless Door Lock

We have all had those times where we wish we didn’t have a door to unlock.  It might be when your hands are full of groceries, when you need to run back inside for a minute but the keys are already in the car’s ignition, and so forth.  Of course we want to keep our doors locked for safety concerns though.  The good news is that there are products known as keyless door locks.  As you can likely gather from the name, a keyless door lock is a lock that you can use without a key!

Before ordering online or running out to your local home improvement store, it is important to consider the pros and cons of these keyless locks for doors.  So what are they?

The Pros of a Keyless Door Lock

Convenience:  Hands down, the biggest pro to having a keyless door lock is that it is convenient.  All you really need is one free finger to punch in your code.  Moreover, some keyless door locks come with a remote that you can push before even stepping outside of your car.  Moreover, you are a lot more likely to lose a physical key than a code.  For that reason, the chances of you ever needing to use a spare key or (worse case) climb through your own window are slim.

Emergency:  In the event of an emergency, these cons are usually two-fold.  If your door is locked with a key, how will emergency workers get inside your home?  The same rings true if they don’t have your code; they will need to find another way inside.  On that same note, if you are away from your home, it is a lot easier to give a friend or family member a code to enter in then describe the method of finding your “hidden” spare key.

The Cons of a Keyless Door Lock

Children:  If you have children, you will also want to ensure they have access to your home.  Young children will likely have a hard time remembering your code, but luckily they are less likely to need to unlock the door by themselves.  As for older children, there is always the concern that they might use the door key while in the view of others or tell someone the code to the front door.  Luckily, teenagers and older elementary school aged kids are at the age where they will understand an “these are the rules” talk.

Guess:  There is that one saying “a criminal will always find a way.”  This is true.  If someone has decided they are going to break into your home, they will likely try a million different ways to gain entrance into your home.  With a keyless door lock, they can keep guessing and guessing until it is right.  Moreover, after a while you may notice that your keypad begins to fade.  This makes it easier for a criminal to gain access to your home because they basically know what numbers to push.
